Memorial Day Murph

Over the past decade in many Tactical Fitness circles, members have been doing the Memorial Day Murph.

The Murph was first made popular by the CrossFit community, who perform many workouts created to honor fallen heroes, commonly called the Hero’s WOD (Workout of the Day).

Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005.

The workout itself was Michael’s favorite workout to do, which at the time referred to it as “Body Armor”, hence the 20 lb vest or body armor as part of the workout prescription.

In a more main-stream path, the movie Lone Survivor was released in 2013, which tells the story of Michael Murphy and his men based off the book written by Marcus Luttrell, the lone surviving SEAL from Murphy’s group.

The Murph is now performed by men and women accross the US on Memorial Day as a fundraiser for the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and to honor all those who have served and sacrificed in the line of duty.

Here’s what it looks like:

  • 1 mile Run
  • 100 Pull-Ups
  • 200 Push-Ups
  • 300 Air Squats
  • 1 mile Run

*With a 20 lb Vest or Body Armor

It looks brutal – and it is! – but it is also do-able, as the movement are pretty straightforward, and it can be tweaked / modified if needed.

The 1 mile runs HAVE to be completed first and last.

Of course, you can run / walk these as needed.

The pull ups, push ups, and air squats can be “partishioned” – the most common strategy is to partition the reps into 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats.

The pull ups could also be “scaled down”, and done with assistance like a band. You could even substitute ring rows to scale further.

And the push ups can of course be done with your hands elevated on a box or bench, or from the knees.

The workout can be performed with a weight vest, or without one.

And finally, you can also try a “half Murph” – where you do a 1/2 mile run, 50 pull ups, 100 push ups, and 150 air squats – if you don’t feel ready to attack the whole thing.

Doing the workout, thinking of, and honoring those who served and sacrificed for our country is the main point.

Take the “Murph” Challenge.

And have a thoughtful Memorial Day.

When is the best time to start a fitness program?

Maybe you want to lose 10 or 20 pounds of fat, gain some lean muscle, and just improve your overall condition.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about it for quite a while now.

You see a picture of yourself on Facebook, are a little disgusted, and that’s it.

You decide – I’m going to start a new fitness program!

I’m going to lose this weight and get myself back in shape!

But then you think – oh no, wait: we have a Holiday weekend coming up where we’re going to be out of town. We’ll be busy leading up to that, and probably will be eating and drinking and all kinds of stuff.

I’ll wait ’till we get back into town.

So you wait.

Then you get back into town.

You’re busy at work for the first day or two since you were out for a few days and got a little behind.

You forget about how you were going to start your workout plan.

And then you remember, and you start researching gyms again. You’re excited. You’re ready to start reaching out to some different places and give one a try.

But now, your kid gets sick!

Your schedule is thrown all out of whack.

So you wait.

And the cycle begins again …

.

.

Sound familiar?

Here’s the deal: there is NEVER going to be a perfect time to start a fitness program.

There are ALWAYS going to be lots of other things going on in your life.

Time will tick away.

You don’t HAVE to start exercise today – and honestly, you’ll probably be just fine.

BUT, you will likely pay for it later.

And if you want to live a long, quality life – for yourself and your loved ones – your health NEEDS to be at the top of the priority list.

So the best time to start a fitness program is NOW!

Contact us today.

Or contact someone else if it’s a better fit.

But just START!

Make health and fitness a top priority for yourself, starting now, and forever. And your life will never be the same

Meet Kendall :)

We are excited to officially welcome Kendall to the FVT Team!

Kendall’s love for fitness began when she was 7 and fell in love with the sport of swimming. She swam for 15 years, ultimately receiving a partial athletic scholarship to Ohio University, a Mid- American Conference Division I school. During her college athletic career, she excelled in middle-distance events, with a primary focus on Butterfly and the Individual Medley.

For the past 12 years Kendall maintained a healthy lifestyle while moving up the ranks in the Hospitality Industry, finally reaching the level of Director. During this time Kendall became a client at FVT and trained to compete in Spartan Races — ultimately earning her first Trifecta medal in 2016. Kendall recently became a new mom to her now 6 month old daughter. During her maternity leave, Kendall reignited her passion for fitness and became an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor. Since then, she has changed career paths to focus on her fitness career.

Kendall will be working into the regular boot camp rotation at both of our locations over the next few months.

She is also currently accepting personal training clients – apply to work with her here => http://bit.ly/may2019fvtpt

Personal Training Spots + New Pull Up Video on IG

We have a handful of spots left in our personal training program for the month of May.

If you are:

– Just getting started, and want / need more individualized attention
– Want specific guidance on something – extra core workouts, learning / refining the basics of kettlebells, perhaps dailing in your nutrition
– Simply prefer to work with a trainer one-on-one vs in a group setting

This could be the perfect for you.

If you are interested, fill out the short interest form at the link below:

Also!

We have a new video up on the FVT Instagram for you to check out.

Leanne shows you how to do the chin up / pull up hold.

This is a great exercise for beginners who are working towards their first chin up or pull up.

It’s great for building the strength and body awareness required for doing chin ups and pull ups.

I’ve also found it’s a great confidence-builder, and it helps people with overall just getting more comfortable on the bar!

Check it out below – and be follow us while you’re over there 🙂

To your success!

[new video] What should you consider when hiring a trainer?

In today’s video, I talk about things you should consider when hiring a trainer.

In my experience – working with thousands of clients personally over the last 12 years, as well as directly hiring and managing dozens and dozens of personal trainers in that time – the three most important things are:

1 – A warm and friendly demeanor
2 – Clear instruction
3 – Knowledge in helping you reach your specific fitness goals

I go into each of these points in more detail in the video.

Check it out!
